Il Poggione’s Rosso di Montalcino is a younger, more approachable version of Brunello, yet already boasting excellent structure and a bold personality. Rosso di Montalcino is a key wine for this estate, embodying the essence of traditionalism and appreciation of the terroir. It’s the wine of the farmers of old. Produced exclusively with Sangiovese grapes from the estate’s youngest vineyards, Rosso di Montalcino ages for 12 months in large barrels and barriques, followed by a period of bottle aging. Aging in wood, though not mandatory under the Rosso di Montalcino regulations, gives this wine a complex aroma and structure that make it a great “young Brunello,” while also smoothing out the typical tannicity of young Sangiovese. The name is the classic, universally recognized “Rosso di Montalcino.” The grape used is 100% pure Sangiovese. The vineyards used for its production are grown within the company’s grounds and lie at altitudes between 150 and 450 meters above sea level. Harvesting is done by hand. Vinification lasts 15 days and involves the use of the “submerged cap” method in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts at a controlled temperature of 25/28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel tanks. Aged for 12 months in large 30 and 50 hl French oak barrels and 350-liter barriques, followed by a period of bottle aging.
Organoleptic Data Rosso di Montalcino DOC
The color that emerges from the organoleptic examination is an intense and deep ruby red with light and very subtle reflections. The aroma is broad, ethereal, and features notes of red berries. The flavor is well-structured, soft, and persistent with tannins that are not overly aggressive, velvety on the palate.
